Will vaseline hurt my dog?

my dog has serious skin allergies. when he scratches to much and turns red or ends up with scratchs or scabs from scratching, or licks himself raw, we put a dab of neosporin on his wound then cover it with vaseline. the vaseline soothes. and its not a big deal if they lick it up, cant hurt them. the vet even told us to do that. if its hot spots which is when the skin is red and very warm or hot, they have sprays that relive the irritation. we also sometimes put a doggy shirt on him and that prevents him from scratching and covers that wound so it can heal faster and it works.
