Should I go for smooth leather or suede for winter boots?

I have a dilemma, I need a new pair of cute boots for winter, but I don't know if I should get suede, or smooth leather. Which one stands up better to snow, salt, etc? I already have a pair of actual snow boots, but i just want a pair of cute boots to run around in when I don't have to do any trekking through snow.
