If you want to eventually have a gravel/shell driveway, but can't do it right now, you can lay down sheets of OSB or CDX as a temporary driveway. They will hold up for a long time if layed fairly flat. If you want something more permanent or attractive, asphalt is an option. Make sure to let the contractor know you only need a temporary driveway, this should cut the cost 25% or more. A final option (I used this once myself) is to lay down bricks or pavers (sand set them) that can be re-used elsewhere once they are no longer needed for the driveway.
