Computer question: i have like a gajillion running process on my computer at all times?

i would like to find a freeware or have the knowlege to know which process i can terminate without detriment to my system. like right now i am using 60% cpu, have 96 process running and using 55% of physical memory, and i have a newer system.... like 1 year old hp touchsmart....
