Chille earthquake really strong...but not too much damage like Haiti?

now im going by what the multiple media news tell me, and there are damages, but my question is why didnt it destroy chille if it was an 8.8??? The haiti quake was 6-something and pretty much destoryed it. Why was this earthquake more than 20 times more powerfull, yet it didnt do damage like the haiti. Less thgan 300 deaths reported so far, by this time in haiti, there were at least 10k deaths.
